Yesterday's Practice, Saturday's Game, and Sunday's BBQ

Hi all.

Practice at Danehy
It was great to have the field with the lights. We practiced skills and then played a U14 girls team. They were great! Really showed our team how good passing and postioning looked. We won 1-0, but that was pretty lucky as they gave us a run for our money. We will be sharing the field with them every Wednesday so we foresee rematches.

Game This Saturday
Game is at 3:00 in Winchester. Players should arrive by 2:15 ready to warm up and go over strategies. It's approximately a 25 minute drive from Cambridge.

Address: 59 Wendall Street, Winchester.

Snack: Cameron's family is bringing snack. We still need folks to sign up  - have seven of the ten weeks still open. Click on snack link to the right to sign up.

Sunday's BBQ
Some of you have RSVP'd, some have not. Looks like rain on Sunday, but not until later. Hopefully the rain will hold off until after the party. It's pot luck. We'll provide things to grill. Bring appetizers, salads, desserts, or someting more to grill. No sign-up, but I'm sure it will be interesting and no one has ever gone hungry at my house.

Week of September 14th

Hi all. What a great first game! For a team who has never played together before, the players did a fantastic job of communicating, passing, and moving the ball down the field. What a terrific starting point for the new season! For those who were not there, we won 4-1. See our stats page for more details.

PRACTICES
Players should each bring a ball to practice and the game. We would like to do ball skill work where every player has a ball and coaches do not have nor can carry 17 balls to the field. Besides, it is a great habit to have a ball with you so you can always do some extra juggling or dribbling practice if you arrive early, etc. And, as always, water and shin guards are also always needed.

Another thing we'd like to see is players showing up on time and ready to play. We try to do a complete warm-up at the beginning of practicea and before games to help prevent injuries. When players show up without shoes on and spend the first ten minutes getting ready, they are missing an important part of practice. It also makes coaches try to warm some kids up while others have moved on to drills or games, and that makes managing practice a bit difficult. We know that traffic and schedules are not always controlable, but we also know kids can put on their cleats in the car if they're being driven rather than wait to get to the field. Any help from players and families in this regard is MUCH appreciated.

Monday, practice is at Russell from 6:30 - 8:00. Please let Jenn (jennkay@froggy.org) know if you're not going to be there (other committments, illness, Rosh Hashannah).

***Wednesday, PRACTICE HAS BEEN MOVED TO DANEHY 4 FROM 6:30 - 8:00. This is now the permanent place and time and hopefully the last schedule change for the fall season. We were waiting for Susan to get the permit for a field with a light. This means when the days get shorter, we'll be on a field with lights. It also means that Lucas and Gabriel can make it there in time for the start of practice. Win-win! (Daney 4 is the one at the top of the hill with the red track around it.)***

Saturday is our first away game against Winchester. The field is at 59 Wendell St., Winchester. It's about 25 minutes away from Danehy. Players should be there by 2:15 with their cleats on, ball in hand, ready to warm up. Google Map to Field

Sunday is the team party at Henry's house at 5:30. Pot luck - bring your favorite side dish, salad, fruit, or something to grill. Please RSVP to jennkay@froggy.org if you have not already done so.

Snacks: Thanks to Ezra's family for bringing watermelon to the first game. We still need families to sign up to bring snacks. This week's game is spoken for, but going forward there are many open weeks that need filling. Link to snack sign-up is on the right of the blog.

Looking forward to another great soccer week!

New Practice Field and Time

We have managed to get a field with lights on it for Mondays, which is great as it means coaches have time to get there and that as the days get shorter and shorter we'll still be able to see. New practice times and locations:

MONDAYS AT RUSSELL FIELD AT 6:30 - 8:00. Our first practice will be this coming Monday, Labor Day. Please let coaches know if you will not be attending.

Wednesdays remains at Glacken at 5:30 - 7:00. We are still trying to adjust this but there are not enough fields in Cambridge to go around so we're taking this and will see what happens.

Please RSVP to Jennifer (jennkay@froggy.org) if you can make the pot luck BBQ on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 5:30. 164 Pemberton Street 617-233-5529.

Welcome to the Vipers 2015-16!

Hello Vipers and Viper Supporters!

For some of you, this is a familiar league and team. For others, it's the first time playing in BAYS or a return to BAYS. We are excited to see the new Vipers in action and look forward to everyone getting to know one another soon!

We are looking forward to soccer starting up next week.

Here's the information you need to know for the start of the season:

PRACTICES
Our first practice is Monday, September 7, at Danehy 2 from 5:30 - 7:00.

Going forward, we are still trying to find times and fields that will work for our coaches and for the limited light we end up with in the fall. It is still unclear if there will be access to fields with lights, so for the moment, our practices will be:

Mondays at Danehy 2 from 5:30 - 7:00 (or until it's dark).

Wednesdays at Glacken Field from 5:30 - 7:00 (or until it's dark).

We are hoping to find at least one day when we can have a field with lights and will change practice to be a bit later as our two main coaches (Lucas and Gabriel) cannot get to practice before 6:00.

Kids need to bring the following to practice every time:

  • cleats
  • SHIN GUARDS (YES, they have to wear them at practice)
  • full water bottle, two if it's hot
  • weather appropriate clothes (sweats if it is cold out)

COACHES
Speaking of coaches, this year the Vipers have five coaches.

Gabriel Lenhoff and Lucas Morales (Gabriel is Theo's brother, Lucas is his friend) - Will be the main coaches who run practices and teach the players game strategies. Due to scheduling, they may not arrive until 6:00 so other coaches will begin practices. Gabriel: leirbag_93@comcast.net Lucas: lucasmattos@gmail.com

Jennifer Kay.Goodman (Henry's mom) - Will handle most emails, schedule issues, and team management. Will also be at practices and help with coaching. Contact: jennkay@froggy.org and 617-233-5529 (cell for calling or texts)

Akim Lenhoff (Theo's dad) - Will attend practices and help with coaching. akiml@comcast.net

Charlie Bent (Will's dad) - Will attend practices and help with coaching. cqbent@gmail.com

SCHEDULE
Our first game is Saturday, September 12th at home (Danehy 2) at 3:30. Players should show up READY TO PLAY by 2:45. Please adhere to the rules above that players are geared up and have water bottles and are not wasting practice time putting on cleats, etc, during our warm-up time.

The schedule for the season is on the BAYS website for the fall season. You can click here for a link to our schedule page.

GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS
Our goals for the season are to have fun, help each player become a stronger player, and to work together as a team to support one another.

To achieve these goals, coaches expect that players will:

  • Treat one another and coaches with respect.
  • Show up to practices and games and let coaches know IN ADVANCE if this is not possible. This includes being on time and having cleats, shin guards, and uniforms (for games) on upon arrival, not taking ten minutes of practice time to get ready.
  • Listen to coaches and follow instructions the first time they're given.
  • Give their best effort.
SNACK
Families take turns bringing snack for games. Snack is FRUIT ONLY and water or low-sugar sports drinks. There is a sign-up here - please choose a game where you can supply snack for everyone. Kids like sliced apples, grapes, watermelon, and other easy-to-eat fruit. When you bring snack, please also bring a trash bag and make sure that everything is cleaned up before players leave at the end of the game.

TEAM GET TOGETHER
For those who are free, and weather permitting, there will be a team get together on Sunday, September 13th, at Henry's house at 5:00. This is a pot luck BBQ. Bring a dish to share and have a chance to meet the other players families, and talk to coaches. This also gives the players a chance to socialize and get to know each other. We'll have soccer balls and kids can head to the park to play if they want. Please RSVP to jennkay@froggy.org.
